Faith, Hope, Love
And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13)
This document is primarily a compilation of three previous documents composed by this website regarding faith, hope, and love. Overall, there is little commentary regarding these three most significant aspects of Christianity; although, it should be noted that faith results in (brings forth) hope and hope results in (brings forth) love — the true reflection of God (1 John 4:8).
The preponderance of this document is reflected in its quotations of most of the relevant passages of Scripture regarding these three aspects of Christian doctrine. It is suggested that the student of Scripture could well utilize the following in a comprehensive study of faith, hope, and love; applying the same to an all-inclusive doctrinal presentation.

Acts 10:4 To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.

Acts 14:23 So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

Acts 16:31, 34 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” . . . (34) Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.
Acts 18:8 Then Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his household. And many of the Corinthians, hearing, believed and were baptized.
Acts 19:4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”
Acts 20:21 Testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
Acts 26:18 To open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.
Romans 1:17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith [an expression meaning completely, from first to last]; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” (See Habakkuk 2:4; Romans 2:20; Galatians 3:11; Hebrews 10:38)
Romans 3:21, 22 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, (22) even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. (cf. 21-30)
Romans 4:3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” (See Romans 4:9, 11; Galatians 3:6; James 2:23)
Romans 4:5 But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.
Romans 5:1, 2 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, (2) through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Romans 9:30 What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness of faith.
Romans 10:8-11 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): (9) that if you confess with your mouth [an expression confirming genuineness of action] the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart [reinforcing the fact that faith must be genuine] that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (10) For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation [the natural outgrowth of an inward imputation of righteousness, which is solely by faith]. (11) For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. (cf. Galatians 3:2)
Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
1 Corinthians 1:21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.
Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

Galatians 3:2 This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Galatians 3:22 But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
Galatians 3:24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Ephesians 1:13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.
Ephesians 2:8, 9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, (9) not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Philippians 3:9 And be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith.
1 Timothy 1:16 However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.
1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh [confirmation of Christ’s deity], justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory.
1 Timothy 4:10 For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

James 2:14, 17, 21-26 (The Selection Referring to Soul-Salvation) What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? . . . (17) Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. . . . (21) Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? (22) Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? (23) And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. (24) You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. (25) Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? (26) For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
1 Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (4) to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, (5) who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
1 Peter 2:6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.”
1 John 3:23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
1 John 5:1, 5 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. . . . (5) Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
1 John 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
HOPE, another Look www.bibleone.net
The word “hope” in the Old Testament conveys a couple of different meanings, depending on the Hebrew word from which it is translated. The Hebrew word yachal primarily conveys “to patiently wait;” whereas the Hebrew words tiqvah and towcheleth convey an “expectation.”
In the New Testament there are two words translated “hope.” Seven of approximately fifty-eight passages utilize the Greek word elpizo [the verb form of elpis (a noun)], while the majority of passages utilize elpis. Both primarily convey a “favorable and confident expectation, an eager anticipation of looking forward with assurance.”
A careful examination of the New Testament reveals that Christians are subject to and enjoy a distinct “hope,” to which they should eagerly, favorably, and confidently look forward to; and, should they do this, it will most favorably influence their lives to the saving of their souls (please see the first study pertaining to “hope” on www.bibleone.net regarding this issue).
The Enigma
It is mystifying how anyone is able to serenely enjoy life without a proper relationship with the Creator of the Universe, without the assurance of eternal life in accordance with His Word.
Of course, this doesn’t appear to be such a factor with the young, primarily due to the absence of evidence that life will end, i.e., they see only their growth, not the awareness of an impending termination of temporal life, which increasingly becomes significant as one grows older. Along with the accompanying loss of vitality coupled with an increase in various physical frailties, such awakens an individual to the reality that his life, as he has known it, will soon come to an end.
With a biblical-based hope, this reality can be a most welcomed event, one that is favorably and confidently expected, eagerly anticipated. But without such a hope, only fear and anxiety can dominate. It is both natural and universal “to want to live.” Death, if associated with the unknown, is always distressing.
The Unbeliever
I think of the atheist, one who believes that there is no God, who believes that all that exists essentially came from “nothing.” As I view all that is around me, from the microscopic particles composing all matter to the enormity of the Universe, with all the complexity, sophistication, interdependent structure, and organization that rules this vast array of existence, I often feel it would take more “faith” to believe that all of this sprang from “nothing,” than to understand it is the product of Intelligence and Design. Simply examining a watch (time piece), with all its symbiotic parts, knowing that it only could have been created by a designer, should be enough to convert any atheist.
One thing the atheist, the agnostic and the non-Christian have in common — they all have “nothing” to look forward to upon their death. Their future of nonexistence is empty, without any favorable and confident expectation. They walk this world knowing for certain that this is all they have, a life without hope of any further existence.
The Believer
On the other hand, the believer in Jesus Christ, the one who has “passed from death to life” (John 5:24; Acts 16:30, 31; Ephesians 2:1, 8, 9), may avail himself of a very uplifting, exhilarating, and stimulating hope, spoken of throughout Scripture, but more predominantly in the New Testament.
Following is a compilation of a few passages mentioning hope within the Old Testament, followed by mostly the same within the New Testament. One who studies these various passages, as they fit within God’s comprehensive plan of redemption for man throughout the entirety of the New Testament, will come to the realization that the Christian’s future hope is somewhat diverse and qualified, as follows:
1) The one who has been saved through faith in Christ (i.e., the salvation of his spirit), but who fails to pursue, and realize the salvation of his soul (culminating at the Judgment Seat of Christ), will not be able to experience the full scope of the hope intended for him, which is to say that he will not be able to co-reign as a coheir with Christ throughout His coming millennial (1,000 year) reign over this earth. Though he will regain stature upon the conclusion of the Messianic Era and throughout the eternal ages that follow.
2) On the other hand, the Christian who by faithfulness to Christ in this lifetime achieves the salvation of his soul will experience the full measure of the hope that awaits him, as a co-reigning coheir with Christ during the Millennium, and throughout the eternal ages that follow.

Koine (common) Greek, the language utilized by the human authors of the New Testament, contained four words that were utilized by the authors to convey different forms of love (and one not used), as follows: (1) phileo – affection of friends or kinsmen [26 times]; (2) philadelphia – love of the brethren [6 times]; (3) philanthropia – love for mankind [2 times]; and (4) agapao/agape – to have strong affection for someone or something, apart from any sexual desire [approximately 300 times]. The Koine Greek word erao or eros, meaning “sexual desire/passionate longing,” was never used in the New Testament.
The theological uses of “love” in the New Testament concern the love of (1) God to man, (2) man to God, and (3) man to man. And although the usage would be the same in the Old Testament, this document will only concern itself with the New.
Matthew 5:43-46a, 48 (Love your enemies to enhance the relationship with God, for reward, and for maturity [Luke 6:27, 32, 36; Romans 12:14, 20; 1 Corinthians 4:12; 1 Peter 1:15, 16; 2:23; 3:9) You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” (44) But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, (45) that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. (46) For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? . . . (48) Therefore you shall be perfect [lit. complete, mature], just as your Father in heaven is perfect [complete].

Romans 5:5 (Our hope is unfailing because the love of God was poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit [2 Corinthians 1:22; Galatians 4:6; Ephesians 1:13, 14]) Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Romans 5:8 (God demonstrated His love for man by sacrificing His Son [John 3:16; 1 John 3:16; 1 John 4:9, 10]) But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 8:28 (All things work together for good to those who love God [Romans 9:11, 23, 24; 2 Timothy 1:9]) And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:35-39 (Nothing can separate Christians from God’s love in Christ) Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? (36) As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” (37) Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. (38) For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, (39) nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 9:3, 4a (The ultimate expression of love for others [John 15:13; 1 John 3:16]) For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh, (4) who are Israelites . . . .
Romans 12:9 (Love is not to be hypocritical as one hates evil [Psalm 34:14; 36:4; 97:10; Amos 5:15; 1 Timothy 1:5; 1 Peter 1:22; Philippians 2:3; Hebrews 13:1; 1 Peter 1:22; 2:17; 3:8; 5:5; 2 Peter 1:7]) Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.
Romans 12:10-21 (The nature of brotherly love [Philippians 2:1-4; Hebrews 13:1; 1 Peter 2:17; 1 Thessalonians 4:9]) Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; (11) not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; (12) rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; (13) distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality. (14) Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. (15) Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. (16) Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. (17) Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. (18) If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. (19) Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. (20) Therefore, if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head. (21) Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 13:8-10 (Love is the fulfillment of the Law [Matthew 7:12; 22:37-40; Galatians 5:14, 22, 23; 1 Timothy 1:5; James 2:8]) Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. (9) For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (10) Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

1 Corinthians 8:1b-3 (The advantage of love for God over knowledge [Psalm 1:6; 37:18; Nahum 1:7; John 10:14, 27; 2 Timothy 2:19]) . . . We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. (2) And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. (3) But if anyone loves God, this one is known by Him.
1 Corinthians 13:1-14:1a (Love is greater than Faith and Hope, which Christians are to pursue [Proverbs 10:12; 1 Peter 4:8]) Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. (2) And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. (3) And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. (13) And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (14:1a) Pursue love . . . .
1 Corinthians 16:14 (All is to be done with love [1 Corinthians 14:1; 1 Peter 4:8]) Let all that you do be done with love.
2 Corinthians 2:6-8 (Paul urges the church in Corinth to reaffirm their love [Romans 14:1; 15:1; Galatians 6:1; 2 Thessalonians 3:15; 2 Timothy 2:25; James 5:19, 20]) This punishment which was inflicted by the majority is sufficient for such a man, (7) so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow. (8) Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him.
1 Corinthians 4:21 (Love is related to a spirit of gentleness) What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?
2 Corinthians 5:14, 15 (The love of Christ compels Christians to live for Him [Romans 5:15; 6:11-12; 14:7-8; 1 Corinthians 6:19; Galatians 2:20; 1 Thessalonians 5:10; 1Peter 4:2]) For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; (15) and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.
2 Corinthians 8:24 (Christians should demonstrate their love) Therefore show to them and before the churches the proof of your love and of our boasting on your behalf.
Galatians 5:6 (In Christ all are one because it is by faith that works through love [1 Corinthians 7:19; Galatians 3:28; 6:15; Colossians 3:11; 1 Thessalonians 1:3; James 2:18, 20, 22]) For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.
Galatians 5:13 (Christians are not to take advantage of their liberty but are to serve one another through love [1 Corinthians 8:9; 9:19; Galatians 6:2; 1 Peter 2:16; 2 Peter 2:19; Jude 1:4]) For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
Galatians 5:14 (To love one’s neighbor is to fulfill the Law [Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 7:12; 22:39, 40; Romans 13:8, 9; James 2:8]) For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Ephesians 2:4-7 (God’s grace toward mankind is the product of His great love for mankind [Acts 15:11; Romans 5:6, 8, 10; 6:4-5; 10:12; Ephesians 1:7; 2:1, 7, 8; Colossians 2:12, 13; 3:1, 3; Titus 3:5]) But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, (5) even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), (6) and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, (7) that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 3:16-19 (To be rooted and grounded in love is to be strengthened with might through the Holy Spirit in the inner man, to have Christ dwell in one’s heart through faith, and to know the love of Christ and be filled with all the fullness of God [John 1:16; 14:23; Romans 7:22; 9:23; 10:3, 11, 12; 2 Corinthians 4:16; Ephesians 1:7, 18, 23; 2:22; 6:10; Philippians 4:19; Colossians 1:11, 23, 27; 2:6, 7, 9, 10]) That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, (17) that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, (18) may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height — (19) to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Ephesians 4:1, 2 (We are to walk worthy of our calling by bearing with one another in love [Acts 20:19; Galatians 5:22, 23; Ephesians 3:1; Philippians 1:27; Colossians 1:10; 3:12, 13; 1Thessalonians 2:12; Philemon 1:1, 9]) I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, (2) with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love.
Ephesians 4:13-16 (Our spiritual growth must involve speaking the truth in love in order for the body of Christ [the Church] to be edified in love [Isaiah 28:9; Zechariah 8:16; Matthew 11:7; Romans 16:18; 1 Corinthians 14:20; 2 Corinthians 2:17; 4:2; Hebrews 13:9; Ephesians 1:22; 2:21; 4:25; Colossians 1:18, 28; 2:2, 19; 1 John 3:18]) Till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; (14) that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, (15) but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head — Christ — (16) from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

(28) So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.
Ephesians 6:23 (Love and faith are co-partners [1 Thessalonians 3:6; 5:8]) Peace to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Timothy 4:12 (We are to be an example to believers in love, etc. [1 Corinthians 16:11; Titus 2:7, 15; 1 Peter 5:3]) Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
1 Timothy 6:11 (We are to pursue love, among other qualities [Deuteronomy 33:1; 2 Timothy 2:22; 3:17]) But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.
2 Timothy 1:7 (God has given us a spirit of love, along with power and a sound mind [Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8; Romans 8:15]) For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

2 Timothy 4:8 (The crown of righteousness will be awarded to those who love Christ’s appearing [1 Corinthians 9:25; 2 Timothy 1:12; James 1:12; 1 Peter 5:4; Revelation 2:10]) Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
Titus 2:2 (Be sound [wholesome] in love) That the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound [wholesome] in faith, in love, in patience.
Titus 3:4-7 (The result of the love of God our Savior toward us [John 3:3, 5; Romans 3:20; 9:11; 11:6; Galatians 2:16; Ephesians 2:4, 8, 9; 5:26; 2 Timothy 1:9; Titus 2:11; 1 Peter 3:21]) But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, (5) not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, (6) whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, (7) that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Philemon 4, 5, 7 (Philemon, a Christian who demonstrated proper love [Ephesians 1:15; Colossians 1:4; 2 Thessalonians 1:3]) I thank my God, making mention of you always in my prayers, (5) hearing of your love and faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints . . . (7) For we have great joy and consolation in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed by you, brother.
Hebrews 6:10 (God will not forget one’s labor of love [1 Thessalonians 1:2-4]) For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
Hebrews 10:24 (Consider one another to stir up love) And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works.
Hebrews 13:1 (Let brotherly love continue [Romans 12:10; 1 Thessalonians 4:9; 1 Peter 1:22; 2:17; 3:8; 4:8; 2 Peter 1:7; 1 John 3:11; 4:7, 20-21]) Let brotherly love continue.
James 1:12 (The crown of life will be awarded to those who love God, enduring temptation [Job 5:17; Proverbs 3:11, 12; Matthew 10:22; 19:28, 29; 1 Corinthians 9:25; 2 Timothy 4:8; Hebrews 12:5; James 2:5; 1 Peter 5:4; Revelation 2:10; 3:1]) Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
James 2:5 (God’s promise to those who love Him is to be heirs of the kingdom [Exodus 20:6; 1 Samuel 2:30; Proverbs 8:17; Matthew 5:3; Luke 6:20; 12:21, 32; John 7:48; 1 Corinthians 1:26, 28; 2:9; 1 Timothy 6:18; 2 Timothy 4:8; James 1:12; Revelation 2:9]) Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?
James 2:8 (The royal law is to love your neighbor as yourself; to do so is to do well [Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 22:39; Romans 13:8, 9; Galatians 5:14; 6:2]) If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well.
1 Peter 1:6-9 (To love Christ will culminate in the salvation of the soul [1 Peter 1:22]) In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, (7) that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, (8) whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, (9) receiving the end of your faith — the salvation of your souls.
1 Peter 1:22 (Purifying the soul involves a sincere and fervent love of the brethren [Acts 15:9; Romans 12:9, 10; 1 Thessalonians 4:9; 1 Timothy 1:5; Hebrews 13:1; 1 Peter 2:17; 3:8; 4:8; 2 Peter 1:7; 1 John 3:18; 4:7, 21]) Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart.

And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. (17) But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? (18) My little children let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
1 John 3:23 (The love content of His commandment [Matthew 22:39; John 6:29; 13:34, 35; 15:12; 17:3; Ephesians 5:2; 1 Thessalonians 4:9; 1 Timothy 1:5; 1 Peter 4:8; 1 John 2:8, 10; 3:11; 4:21]) And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
1 John 4:7-16 (God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him [1 John 2:5a]) Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. (8) He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (9) In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. (10) In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (11) Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (12) No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. (13) By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. (14) And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. (15) Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. (16) And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.
1 John 4:20, 21 (He who loves God must love his brother also [Matthew 22:37, 39; John 13:34, 35; 15:12; 1 John 2:4; 3:17, 23; 4:12]) If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? (21) And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.
1 John 5:2, 3 (When we love God and keep His commandments, we love the children of God [Micah 6:8; Matthew 11:30; John 14:15, 21, 23; 15:10; 16:33; 1 Corinthians 15:57; 1 John 3:9; 4:4, 15; 2 John 1:6]) By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. (3) For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.
2 John 5, 6 (Love is to walk according to His commandments [John 13:34; 15:12; Ephesians 5:2; 1 Timothy 1:5 ; 1 Peter 4:8; 1 John 2:7, 8; 3:11, 23;]) And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another. (6) This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.
3 John 5, 6a (Love is doing for others, brethren and strangers [1 John 3:16-18]) Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers, (6) who have borne witness of your love before the church. . . .
